Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Texas

Texas has been at the center of the war on drugs for several decades now, and the problems that the state faces have only intensified since the opioid epidemic began. Texas plays host to 5 major drug trafficking corridors across the border with Mexico: the El Paso, Big Bend, Del Rio, Laredo, and Rio Grande Valley corridors. While many Mexican cartels operate in this area, as of 2017 the major two were the Gulf and Los Zetas cartels. While the cartels handle drug trafficking into the US at large, local drug distribution is performed by gangs including the Bandidos, Barrio Azteca, HPL, La Linea, Mexicles, Orejon, Paisas, Sur-13, Tangos, Texas Mexican Mafia, and the Texas Syndicate. Some of the drugs that have seen increased availability in Texas recently include marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids, crystal meth, cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioids. While the situation is looking dire in Texas, if someone is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, there is ample opportunity for them to find help/ There are hundreds of drug and alcohol detox centers across the state that can help someone safely through the detox process, and connect them with further treatment and care after detox has been completed.

Texas Addiction & Detox Statistics

  • Although Texas has been affected by the heroin epidemic like virtually all other states, alcohol remains the state’s biggest problem, seen in all demographics. For instance, it’s estimated at at least one in four adolescents in grades 7 through 12 have abused alcohol over the past month.
  • Speaking of youths, Texas appears to suffer from a youth subculture in which alcohol abuse is common and perhaps even expected. According to surveys, approximately 12 percent of adolescents in grades 7 to 12 admit that the only way they consume alcohol is by binge drinking.
  • Heroin has become a major issue nationwide, but it’s particularly problematic in Texas due to the state’s proximity to Mexico. In particular, Mexican cartels have been smuggling the drug into Texas before distributing it across the country. Being so close to the source, much of the heroin found throughout Texas is an extremely potent form of heroin known as Mexican black tar, which many consider being one of the most potent forms of heroin that exists.
  • Heroin in Texas has been found to be both stronger than most heroin found elsewhere and less expensive; this has resulted in heroin addicts experiencing prolonged periods of active addiction with the average being 12 years between the onset of addiction the sobriety.
  • Over an eight-year period, accidental drug overdoses increased by an astounding 150 percent, which has attributed to the state’s recent focus on improving the quality and availability of addiction treatment.
