In 2016, Vermont ranked 8th for most heroin overdose deaths, at 8.7 fatalities per every 100,000 residents. The proximity of Vermont to the Canadian border contributes to this issue, as it sees drugs pass through the state from Canada to the rest of the US for eventual sale. In 2007 alone, there were 68 drug-related deaths in the state of Vermont. For reference, the population of Vermont in 2007 was just under 623,500.
There are far fewer adolescents using tobacco products in Vermont than in the United States overall.
Underage alcohol abuse is a major problem across the entire United States; however, much like with tobacco products, there are far fewer adolescents and teens abusing alcohol in Vermont than in the United States overall. For instance, about 15 percent of Vermont high school students abuse alcohol for the first time before the age of 13, which is much lower than the 20 percent of high school students nationwide.
