Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Alaska

Isolated from the continental United States, Alaska is the state that is probably most often associated with cold and darkness. While it’s true that there are times of the year when Alaska loses sunlight entirely, people tend to have a lot of misconceptions about this highly misunderstood state. For one thing, Alaska is a marvel when it comes to wildlife; much of the state has been undisturbed, meaning that there are hundreds of miles of beautiful scenery to behold. And despite being located so far North, there are many parts of the state that still experience seasons like the majority of the continental U.S. enjoys. For its incomparable beauty, Alaska is quickly becoming a popular destination for individuals in need of detox or addiction treatment.

Alaska Addiction & Detox Statistics

  • Alaska is not a state that many would associate with the growing drug problem that’s been occurring throughout the United States. However, approximately 37 percent of all crimes committed in Alaska involve alcohol and drugs.
  • Of all the substances prone to abuse in Alaska, alcohol remains the biggest problem. In the city of Anchorage, no less than 80 percent of jailed adults admit to having been abusing alcohol prior to their arrests.
  • In addition to alcohol, heroin is becoming a major problem throughout Alaska, which is reflected in the major spike in the number of heroin seizures that have been occurring throughout the state. Since 2013, Alaska has seen a 94-percent increase in the number of annual heroin seizures.
  • Historically, the population of individuals with alcohol problems have exhibited elevated rates of suicides. However, perhaps due to going extended periods without sunlight, Alaskans with alcohol problems account for 70 percent of the suicides in the state.
  • Alcohol has become a major problem among communities of Alaskan Natives, too. In fact, about 85 percent of instances of domestic violence and 80 percent of instances of sexual assault are fueled by alcohol in communities of Alaskan Natives.

Alaska Offering Rehab Placement Services for Addicts

Throughout much of the United States, there’s a problem with treatment availability. It seems that there are many more people in need of treatment than there is a capacity to treat them. This has been the case in Alaska, too; however, the state has recently expanded its capacity for addiction treatment and now it’s offering placement services for addicts. In a recent news report, a service called Elite Rehab Placement has begun offering placement services for addicts throughout Alaska, helping them to find the right resources for their specific recovery needs. This is a great model for the rest of the country to follow.
