Most of these are located in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield. There are also others located across the north and southeastern parts of the state. These treatment providers can help someone begin their recovery and can also provide referrals to further treatment options once detox is complete.

Depending on the substance someone had used, certain types of detox may be recommended. If someone is struggling with certain types of prescription drug or alcohol addiction, then entering a medical detox may be necessary. There are 7 medical detox centers in Missouri. Most of them are along I-70 and there is also one in Springfield. Other types of drug detox may be possible at an inpatient detox or a detox that provides outpatient services.

Once detox is completed, it is highly recommended to seek aftercare and further substance abuse treatment. Finding a drug or alcohol rehab can go a long way toward improving someone's chances of recovery. These centers provide addiction treatment services and behavioral health treatment options. This can help someone not only quit using drugs or alcohol short term but also stay sober in the long term. Missouri has 10 providers offering inpatient treatment, 60 that offer residential treatment, and 253 outpatient rehab facilities.

Dual diagnosis mental health issues are very common among people struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction. A 2020 study by Mental Health America ranked Missouri at number 40 in the nation. This means that there is a higher prevalence of mental illness and lower access to mental healthcare in the state. This was only a measure of the general population and did not address people with substance use disorders. Missouri has 143 SAMHSA-approved rehab programs that can treat dual diagnosis disorders. These drug rehab centers provide more behavioral therapy and mental health services than traditional drug or alcohol treatment programs. Drug Abuse In Missouri

Missouri has become a major hotspot for drug activity over the last decade, due in large part to the opioid epidemic. While opioids have become more popular in recent years, there have also been increases in other drugs, particularly crystal meth and cocaine. In 2017, there were 91 meth labs seized by law enforcement in Missouri which is significantly higher than the national average. Jefferson County was home to 25 of these meth labs, a higher number than any other county. More recently in October of 2021, the DEA along with other agencies arrested 17 people for drug trafficking. More than half of these people were arrested in St. Louis. Upon the arrests, law enforcement seized 50 pounds of fentanyl, 500 pounds of crystal meth, along with money and guns.

There have also been samples of cocaine seized in Missouri that have contained fentanyl, which is used as a cutting agent. This is concerning as it can lead to opioid overdoses from someone using a drug that they think is only cocaine. While the amount of cocaine available on the street in Missouri remained fairly stable from 2016 to 2017, the amounts of marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl have all increased during this timeframe.

While the drug problem may be worsening in Missouri, there is still help available. If someone is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and wants help, there are many drug and alcohol detox centers all across the state that can help someone being the journey of recovery safely and connect them with further care and treatment once detox has been completed.

Missouri Addiction & Detox Statistics

  • Alcohol remains the most problematic mind-altering substance in the state of Missouri. According to surveys conducted in 2009, approximately 36 percent of Missouri residents over the age of 12 engage in binge-drinking behavior two or more times per week.
  • Across the entire US, opioids like heroin and prescription pain medication have reached widespread recreational use. This is so much so that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention refers to opioids as an “epidemic”. The opioid addiction problem is prominent in Missouri too. This is especially so among adolescents and young adults. In 2012, over 24 percent of admissions to programs for opioid addiction were individuals under the age of 24.
  • Opioid drugs and alcohol are substances that one might expect to be problematic in Missouri due to their widespread use throughout the rest of the US. However, Missouri also has a major problem with crystal methamphetamine. Out of all the drug-related deaths that occur in Missouri, about 63 percent of them are directly due to the use of crystal meth.
  • In March of 2021, a routine traffic stop turned into a massive crystal meth arrest. A car search near Booneville, Missouri uncovered over 75 pounds of crystal meth. The estimated street value was around $1,000,000.
  • State-funded studies have determined that the annual cost of illicit drug abuse on the whole of Missouri is at least $7 billion. Much of this cost is related to the burden of substance abuse on society. The majority of the costs are related to criminal justice, law enforcement, and education.
  • There are roughly 6.1 million people living in Missouri today. Of those individuals, roughly 10 percent either have substance abuse problems or are abusing chemical substances. These people are at risk of developing substance abuse problems. Additionally, three in five Missouri residents with a substance abuse problem are male.
