Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Florida

Finding help for substance use disorders in Florida can seem scary at first. There are so many choices that it can be overwhelming. The coastal regions of Florida are absolutely swarming in detox and treatment centers. Orlando also has several dozen rehab facilities. The inland regions are another story. While there are still treatment centers in inland Florida they are much fewer and further between. Between Lake Placid and the Everglades National Park there are almost no treatment or detox centers. With all of these choices, where do you start? There are some things you can do to make this process a little easier. There are a few questions that you can ask yourself that will narrow down your options considerably. If you or a loved one are looking for detox programs or addiction treatment services in Florida then you are in the right place.

When looking for detox treatment providers in Florida it is important to know the different types of detox programs. Florida has an abundance of all different kinds of addiction treatment programs. Similar to rehab programs, the detox centers in Florida are concentrated along the coastal areas. This is even more so with detoxes than it is with rehabs. There are detoxes that provide medical detox and inpatient detox. These programs are usually necessary for people struggling with alcohol addiction and certain kinds of prescription drugs. There are also detox centers that provide outpatient services. These centers are usually cheaper and more flexible but they do not provide the same level of care. Depending on the substance someone was using then one type of detox may be more appropriate. Once detox has been completed then someone can seek aftercare at a drug or alcohol rehab.

Substance abuse treatment can take many forms. Different types of rehab facilities may be more helpful to certain people. Similar to detox, there are rehabs that provide outpatient treatment and inpatient treatment options. There are also residential treatment options that can be a halfway point between outpatient and inpatient. The most appropriate program will depend on someone's using history and the substance they used. Alcohol treatment programs and drug rehab centers may follow the same rough framework, but they are tailored to specific substances. Finding the right treatment center can be a matter of refining your search to find a center that can address your specific behavioral health needs.

Dual diagnosis mental health issues are also quite common among people struggling with addiction. This is especially true in Florida. For the year 2020, Mental Health America ranked Florida in 12th place for the states with the most mental health issues. Florida was also ranked number 40 regarding access to mental healthcare. There are 130 SAMHSA-approved rehab programs in Florida that can provide treatment plans for dual diagnosis clients. These centers focus on both mental health services as well as addiction services. They usually place a heavier emphasis on behavioral therapy and mental healthcare than regular treatment centers. Not everyone needs dual diagnosis care. If you or a loved one struggles with mental health issues and substance abuse then these centers can be an immense help.

Drug Abuse in Florida

Florida has been a hotbed for drug activity for several decades now, and this has only intensified during the opioid epidemic. Florida has also historically seen very high levels of prescription drug abuse. According to the CDC, Florida maintains a strong link between semi-synthetic prescription opioids and fentanyl overdoses. This is possibly due to counterfeit pills that contain fentanyl. The appearance of "grey death" is also concerning. Grey death is a mixture of fentanyl, heroin, carfentanil, and U-47700. All of these drugs are very potent opioids in their own right. Grey death is so potent that it can lead to a fatal overdose from someone touching it with their finger or even inhaling a small amount of the airborne powder. It has been found in large amounts during police drug seizures in Florida. As of 2016, Florida also remains in the top 10 list of states that have the highest drug-related overdoses. For Florida, this was 10th place (fentanyl) and 7th place (hydrocodone & oxycodone) in 2016.

Also in 2016, cocaine actually led to the most overdose deaths than heroin. between 2015 and 2016 there was an 83% increase. This was particularly apparent in Miami, which already had fairly high cocaine overdose death rates. Deaths increased by almost 52% over just one year. Cocaine was also found in more overdose death victims, even if cocaine overdose was not the main cause of death. This showed a 57% increase from 2015 to 2016. Even though drugs are rampant in Florida, the chances for recovery are still present, as Florida is home to a very large number of drug and alcohol detox centers. Entering detox is often the first step someone takes towards changing their life. Florida offers ample opportunity to enter one of these medical detox centers.

Florida Addiction & Detox Statistics

  • Florida has extremely high rates of adolescent substance abuse. According to the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey, 26.5% of Florida middle and high-schoolers reported using any illicit drug in their lifetime. Almost 13% reported illicit drug use in the last 30 days. For marijuana, just over 18% of students admitted to lifetime use. For alcohol, almost 34% of students admitted to lifetime use and almost 14% admitted to alcohol use in the past 30 days.
  • With so many alcohol and drug rehabs, Florida has developed a prominent recovery community. This stems from the individuals who travel to Florida to attend a rehab remaining in Florida after completing treatment. For those traveling to Florida for treatment the benefit is that there are plenty of like-minded individuals with whom they can build supportive relationships.
  • Alcoholism and drug addiction are a huge financial burden to the economy, both in Florida and nationwide. Addiction to alcohol and drugs costs tens of billions of dollars per year in Florida alone.
  • According to the DEA, Florida ranked second place for the number of cocaine overdose deaths in 2018. There were a staggering 1,221 cocaine overdose deaths in 2018 in Florida alone.
  • In 2019, there were several large methamphetamine conversion labs seized in Florida. These labs normally operate in California and Georgia, but Florida is seeing more meth lab activity in recent years.
  • In August of 2021, the US Coast Guard seized a record 1.4 billion dollar amount of drugs off the coast of Florida. This is by far the largest single drug seizure in the Coast Guard's history.
