While you may not think of Alaska when you think of states with drug issues, there is a significant amount of drug trafficking that occurs in the state. Being one of the major crossing points for drugs going from Mexico to Canada, many of these drugs are diverted into Alaska itself. According to the DEA, as of 2017 the Sinaloa cartel out of Mexico is the main drug trafficking organization in the state, and drug distribution is handled by the Border Brothers, Sureños, and Vagos gangs. Additionally, marijuana possession for personal use is legal in Alaska, up to a certain point. Alaska also has a fairly large amount of methamphetamine-associated deaths, as in 2017 there were roughly 11 meth-related deaths per 100,000 people. Heroin also has a fairly large presence in the state, with about 5 heroin-overdose deaths per 100,000 people. While drugs are fairly common in the state, so is the presence of drug detox and addiction recovery services. There are several professional, helpful detox centers in Alaska that can act as an introduction to sobriety, and a life free from drug or alcohol addiction.
