About Berkeley Addiction Treatment Services
Berkeley Addiction Treatment Services — known as BATS — is a nonprofit federally certified Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) serving the East Bay from a clinic at 2975 Sacramento Street in West Berkeley. The program’s clinical mission is narrow and deliberate: it exists to treat people with documented histories of opiate dependence using methadone- and buprenorphine-based therapy paired with counseling, drug testing, and physical exams.
Eligibility is intentionally specific. To enroll, prospective patients must show a documented history of opiate dependence and a documented history of several prior treatment attempts. Patients are screened for active medical and psycho-social issues at intake, and screening is offered for communicable diseases — a public-health framing that reflects the program’s harm-reduction roots and the realities of the population it serves. BATS emphasizes that no one is turned away based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
Services on offer go beyond medication. The team provides medically supervised withdrawal or medically-assisted maintenance, one-on-one counseling, prevention of infectious disease, comprehensive medical screening, and warm-handoff help with social services like legal, housing, and benefits coordination. Care for opiate-dependent pregnant patients is part of the program’s named service set.
Clinical leadership runs deep for a small nonprofit. Executive Director Matonia Williams-Harris oversees operations, with Medical Director Frank E. Staggers, Jr., M.D., physician Gordon S. Raskin, M.D., and Physician’s Assistant Paul Marcus, PA-C, providing clinical care; Intake Coordinator Nikita Williams handles new-patient flow and Binh Tran serves as Fiscal Officer. The program holds accreditation from both the Joint Commission and NCQA, signaling sustained investment in clinical quality and care management standards. BATS is open every day, including limited weekend and holiday hours, with phones answered at 510-644-0200 and intake reachable at gethelp@batsrecovery.com.
