About CAAP Inc
CAAP, Inc., the Cocaine and Alcohol Awareness Program, has been a fixture of Memphis substance use recovery since its founding on January 15, 1989. Operating as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the organization runs five inner-city locations and treats over 1,000 adults each year for chemical dependency, homelessness, domestic violence, and co-occurring mental health challenges. The flagship office at 4023 Knight Arnold Road in Shelby County coordinates the agency’s residential, outpatient, and detox tracks for adults whose finances would otherwise put quality care out of reach.
The clinical program is anchored in cognitive behavioral therapy and substance use counseling, with the SAMHSA registry confirming residential treatment, detox, intensive outpatient, and standard outpatient levels of care. Trauma and PTSD support runs through the curriculum, and admissions teams are equipped to serve veterans, pregnant women, court-ordered clients, and deaf or hard-of-hearing patients through ASL services. CAAP also accepts HIV/AIDS-positive clients and adapts care plans for the dual-diagnosis population it has worked with for more than three decades.
Beyond clinical treatment, CAAP operates a uniquely deep continuum of supportive services for Memphis residents in early recovery. The Homeless Veterans Housing Program, Uptown Manor Apartments, CAAP Place of Hope, Neighborhood Stabilization Program, and Tennessee Recovery Navigators give clients stable housing and peer-led case management as they rebuild after rehab. State Opioid Response (SOR) funding and a DUI Program round out the wraparound model.
Executive Director Albert L. Richardson, Jr. leads the agency from its corporate office at 4041 Knight Arnold Road. CAAP carries CARF accreditation, operates on a sliding scale, and accepts private insurance, state-funded coverage, financial assistance, and self-pay arrangements. The organization remains a key safety-net provider for the Memphis recovery community, particularly for clients who need both behavioral health treatment and the social supports that make long-term recovery possible.
