About Freedom House Recovery Center
Founded in 1974 as a ten-bed detox and residential program, Freedom House Recovery Center has grown over five decades into one of the largest community behavioral health providers in central North Carolina. The organization is headquartered at 104 New Stateside Drive in Chapel Hill, with outpatient clinics in Durham, Roxboro, Warrenton, and Norlina serving Orange, Durham, Person, and Warren counties.
The continuum of care begins with medical detox and includes six residential substance use programs spread across the region. Adults step down into Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient (SAIOP) or Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment (SACOT), supported by medication management, medication-assisted therapy, individual and group counseling, and DWI services. A 16-bed facility-based crisis unit and a 24/7/365 mobile crisis team handle acute behavioral health emergencies for the surrounding communities. Child and adolescent services include outpatient therapy, family therapy, and MH/SU therapeutic groups.
Leadership is anchored by Medical Director Dr. James Groce, a North Carolina native who returned to serve rural and underserved populations, and Clinical Director Christopher Scoville (MSW, MBA, LCSW, LCAS), who oversees clinical practice across all sites. Heather Griffin-Dolciney serves as VP of Quality Assurance and Training after sixteen years as the organization’s Clinical Director. CARF accreditation and National Health Service Corps designation reflect ongoing investment in quality and access for shortage-area communities.
Freedom House accepts Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, state-funded coverage, and self-pay, and offers a sliding-fee scale so cost does not derail care. Services are person-centered and serve veterans, pregnant women, young adults, seniors, children, court-ordered clients, and adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use diagnoses. The clinic was voted “Best in Person County” in the May 2024 Courier-Times.
