About Lloyd C Elam Mental Health Center
The Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center is the behavioral health clinical site for Meharry Medical Group in North Nashville, located on Albion Street near Meharry Medical College. The center is named for Dr. Lloyd C. Elam, a former Meharry president and influential psychiatrist, and continues Meharry’s long-standing mission of providing healthcare with compassion, dignity, and respect to historically underserved communities.
Clinical services include medically supervised detoxification for adults entering treatment in acute withdrawal, residential treatment for those who benefit from a structured live-in environment, and a full continuum of outpatient programming — including intensive outpatient (IOP) and standard outpatient care. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a core modality, and the program is structured to address trauma, PTSD, and co-occurring mental health conditions alongside substance use.
Elam serves a broad population that reflects Meharry’s community-care mission: adolescents, Veterans, pregnant women, young adults aged 18 to 25, seniors, men, women, court-ordered clients, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS. As part of Meharry Medical Group, the program benefits from integration with a larger network of primary care, pediatrics, and specialty clinics — supporting coordinated care for patients whose addiction treatment needs intersect with chronic medical conditions.
The Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center is CARF accredited. Financial assistance is available to help patients access care, in keeping with Meharry’s mission of equitable healthcare for the communities of Metropolitan Nashville and the surrounding region.
