About Sober First Recovery LLC
Sober First Recovery LLC, doing business as Pacific Shores Recovery, has provided drug and alcohol addiction treatment from its Newport Beach location for more than two decades. The Old Newport Boulevard facility sits within walking distance of the oceanfront, with easy access to cafes, restaurants, and shops, plus nearby mountains, deserts, and beaches that the program uses as part of its experiential and lifestyle-recovery work.
The continuum begins with medical detox, supervised by clinical staff with substance-specific stabilization protocols. Clients then progress into residential treatment, intensive outpatient programming, virtual IOP for clients across California who cannot commute daily, traditional outpatient, and sober living. Conditions treated include alcohol use disorder, opioid addiction, benzodiazepine dependence, methamphetamine addiction, and co-occurring trauma and mental health conditions. The program is intentionally veteran-friendly, accepting TRICARE and TriWest VA / CAMP-VA in-network, which makes it accessible to active-duty service members, retirees, and veterans referred through the VA.
Clinical work is led by Founder Mark Manderson (CADC II), author of ‘The Recovery Way’ and a TEDx speaker on addiction recovery, alongside Clinical Director Brad Kingma (LMFT). The team integrates CBT with individual and group counseling, medication-assisted treatment when indicated, and holistic therapies that fit Pacific Shores’ Newport Beach setting. Programming emphasizes the long-arc view of recovery rather than a single 30-day stay, with Manderson’s podcast (The Recovery Roundtable) and book serving as continuing-recovery resources for alumni and prospective clients.
Pacific Shores Recovery is accredited by The Joint Commission and is in-network with TRICARE, TriWest VA, and Aetna, with additional carriers accepted including Cigna, Anthem, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. The program is family-owned and operated, which leadership treats as a deliberate differentiator from larger corporate rehab networks.
