Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Florida

Florida has been a hotbed for drug activity for several decades now, and this has only intensified during the opioid epidemic. Florida has also historically seen very high levels of prescription drug abuse, and according to the NFLIS, Florida is currently the only state with a strong link between semi-synthetic prescription opioids and fentanyl overdoses, possibly because of counterfeit pills containing fentanyl. The appearance of "grey death" is also concerning, as it has been found in large amounts during police drug seizures in Florida. Grey death is a mixture of fentanyl, heroin, carfentanil, and U-47700, all of which are very potent opioids in their own right. Grey death is so potent that it can lead to a fatal overdose from someone touching it with their finger, or even inhaling a small amount of powder in the air. As of 2016, Florida also remains in the top 10 list of states that have the highest drug-related overdoses; for Florida, this is currently 10th place (fentanyl) and 7th place (hydrocodone & oxycodone). Also in 2016, and maybe surprisingly, cocaine actually led to the most overdose deaths, with an 83% increase from 2015. This was particularly apparent in Miami, which already had fairly high cocaine overdose death rates, but which increased by almost 52% over just one year. Also, cocaine was found in more overdose death victims, even if cocaine overdose was not the main cause of death; with a 57% increase from 2015 to 2016. Even though drugs are rampant in Florida, the chances for recovery are still present, as Florida is home to a very large number of drug and alcohol detox centers. Entering detox is often the first step someone takes towards changing their life, and Florida offers ample opportunity to enter one of these medical detox centers.

Florida Addiction & Detox Statistics

  • As is the case in many other states, Florida has extremely high rates of adolescent substance abuse. According to statistics, at least 90 percent of Florida teens have used alcohol, 50 percent have used marijuana, 17 percent have used cocaine, and nearly 13 percent have used hallucinogens.
  • With so many alcohol and drug rehabs, Florida has developed a prominent recovery community. This stems from a trend where more and more of the individuals who travel to Florida to attend a world-renowned rehab will remain in Florida after completing treatment, choosing to live there permanently rather than returning home. For those traveling to Florida for treatment, the benefit is that there are plenty of like-minded individuals with whom they can build supportive relationships while away from home.
  • At various points in recent years, Florida has been considered “ground zero” for drugs like cocaine, marijuana, prescription drugs, and heroin. While these have been — and, to a degree, remain to be — major issues throughout the state, evidence shows that alcohol is still the most problematic substance in Florida. It’s recently been estimated that 35 out of 36 alcoholics in Florida never receive treatment, which makes alcoholism the most untreated disease in the state.
  • Substance abuse and addiction have been attributed to an increase in violence in communities throughout Florida. Among the many ways this has been witnessed is the fact that an astounding 95 percent of all violent acts committed on college campuses throughout Florida is fueled by alcohol. As well, alcohol and drugs have been found to be the catalyst for at least 80 percent of domestic violence incidents that occur throughout the state.
  • Alcoholism and drug addiction are a huge financial burden to the economy, both in Florida and nationwide. In fact, addiction to alcohol and drugs costs tens of billions of dollars per year in Florida alone.
