While most states tend to be known either for their culture, natural beauty, rich history, or climate, the state of Georgia is unique in that it offers a bit of everything. Located in the Southeastern U.S. and neighboring Florida to the north, Georgia is well-known for being a major cultural mecca in a place that rivals any other state in natural beauty and enjoyable climate. In most cities and towns, there’s a laid-back atmosphere that is the ideal combination of urban city and rural country sensibilities. Being such a great mixture of everything has not only made Georgia a destination for vacations and even for permanent residency, but also for addiction treatment. There are currently several hundred addiction treatment and detox centers throughout the state of Georgia, which means that anyone — no matter his or her specific needs — can find the right Georgia detox center.

According to surveys, about 35 percent of Georgia high school students have consumed alcohol over the course of the past month. • Surveys show that more than seven percent of the Georgia population has used illicit drugs over the course of the past month; however, this is slightly lower than the national average of just over eight percent.
  • Other than marijuana, use of illicit drugs in Georgia is lower than the national average at 3.07 percent compared to 3.58 percent, respectively.
  • Rates of deaths from drug overdose are lower in Georgia than the national average at 10.2 per 100,000 people compared to 12.7 per 100,000, respectively.

About 2.1 percent of Georgia residents have used cocaine in the past year, which is higher than most other states.

Getting Sober in Georgia

There are many reasons why Georgia is a great state in which to get and stay sober. For one thing, the natural beauty of the state ensures that there is plenty of scenery to enjoy in a temperate climate where it’s warm and mild for the majority of the year. But if the fast pace of the city is more your speed, Atlanta is a well-known cultural and entertainment hub, which has even become prominent in the film, television, and music industries; on the other hand, Savannah is renowned its forests covered in Spanish moss. Being a southern state, Georgia natives have that hallmark southern charm and hospitality that can make anyone, no matter their background, feel welcome. It’s the type of mellow state where you can feel totally comfortable as you proceed in your recovery.

Georgia Hosts Roundtable to Create Strategy for Addiction Treatment and Prevention

Between the numerous addiction-oriented organizations and the public events dedicated to promoting addiction awareness, Georgia is a state that’s taken a proactive approach with regard to the current opioid epidemic. In a recent round-table discussion held in Savannah between prominent politicians and community activists, it was determined that the group needed to address the influx of overdose incidents in which individuals ended up in emergency rooms. As well, the participants in the round-table discussion agreed that Georgia must develop stronger addiction education and continue the community outreach initiatives, setting a great example for many other states.
