About
About Hampton VAMC
The Hampton VA Medical Center is the principal VA hospital for Veterans on Virginia’s Peninsula and surrounding region, offering a comprehensive Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP) integrated with the broader array of VA medical and mental health services. The facility is located on a historic campus on Emancipation Drive and serves Veterans from Hampton Roads, southeastern Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina.
The SATP provides a continuum of substance use care that begins with medically supervised detoxification and progresses through a residential domiciliary program, intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient services. Cognitive behavioral therapy serves as a core evidence-based modality. The program is particularly attentive to trauma and PTSD — conditions that frequently co-occur with substance use disorders in the Veteran population — and integrates psychiatric care for clients with dual diagnoses.
Hampton VAMC serves men and women Veterans, including pregnant Veterans, seniors, and Veterans living with HIV/AIDS. Telehealth services extend addiction and mental health care to Veterans who cannot easily travel to the main campus, particularly those in rural parts of the catchment area. TRICARE and private insurance are accepted alongside VA benefits.
The facility is accredited by The Joint Commission, an independent national standard for healthcare quality and patient safety. For Veterans on the Peninsula seeking addiction care that fully integrates with their VA medical record, benefits, and the broader VA hospital system, Hampton VAMC operates one of the region’s most comprehensive Veteran-specific substance use programs.
