Arizona is a major hotspot for drug activity in America. This is mostly due to its location as an access point from Mexico to the rest of the US. There is a 75-mile stretch of almost totally unprotected Mexican border that includes the Tohono O’odham Reservation. This is frequently used for drug trafficking by Mexican cartels. According to the DEA the Mexican Sinaloa cartel was the main drug trafficking organization moving drugs into Arizona. Local drug distribution is performed by the Hells Angels and Mexican Mafia gangs. According to the National Institutes of Health, opioids were involved in almost 70% of overdose death in Arizona in 2018. The drug problem in Arizona includes legitimate and counterfeit drugs. In Maricopa County in 2017 there were 32 overdose deaths that were a result of people taking counterfeit oxycodone pills. These pills contained fentanyl and the painkiller dipyrone. Dipyrone has been banned in the US since 1977 but is still widely available in Mexico. The problem is so severe that Arizona has been designated as a "high-intensity drug trafficking area" by the US government.
