Advanced Therapeutic Services, also listed as Addiction Therapeutic Services, operates at 69730 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, California, in the Coachella Valley, with a second location in Barstow serving the High Desert region. The program is CARF accredited and has been honored as a Blue Distinction Center for substance use treatment by Anthem Blue Cross, a designation given to providers that meet rigorous performance standards.
Clinically, ATS specializes in evidence-based outpatient treatment for adults facing addiction, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions. The program is built around day and evening intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization (PHP) programming, with customized scheduling that lets clients maintain employment, family responsibilities, and other commitments while engaging in structured recovery work. Every client receives a thorough assessment and a personalized plan that may include trauma-informed therapy, EMDR, group process, individual counseling, family support, medication management, life skills, and relapse prevention.
The program treats addiction alongside trauma and co-occurring mental health conditions, with explicit recognition that recovery for many clients requires addressing the trauma history and psychiatric concerns underlying substance use. Cognitive behavioral therapy is identified as a core therapeutic modality, with EMDR offered for clients whose trauma processing benefits from that specialized approach.
Founders Jim and Josie Herndon bring direct field experience to the program. Jim Herndon’s clinical work in addiction medicine includes time at the Betty Ford Center starting in 2002 and a later role as Medical Director at ABC Recovery. ATS accepts most insurance plans and is an in-network provider with Anthem Blue Cross, Cigna, TRICARE, Aetna, MHN, Health Net, and most IEHP members. For clients without private insurance, ATS offers private pay plans and financing to reduce out-of-pocket costs.
