About
About Buffalo Valley Inc
Buffalo Valley, Inc. is a nonprofit substance use treatment organization that has served Tennessee for over 30 years, with its core campus in Hohenwald and additional sites across middle Tennessee. Founded in 1979 as a community-based alcohol and substance abuse treatment center, the organization has grown into a multi-service provider that combines clinical treatment with vocational training, housing support, and case management for adults working toward long-term recovery.
Buffalo Valley’s clinical continuum spans medically monitored detoxification, residential rehabilitation, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programming, and traditional outpatient care. This range allows the organization to meet clients at the level of care most appropriate to their current needs and to step them down through progressively less intensive services as recovery progresses. Programming addresses substance use disorder, co-occurring mental health conditions, and PTSD, with specialized tracks including a PTSD-M program and veteran-focused services.
A defining feature of Buffalo Valley’s model is its wraparound approach. Beyond clinical care, the organization invests in job training, GED preparation, life skills training, and Valley Housing, an affiliated affordable housing program that supports low-income, disabled, and previously homeless residents across middle Tennessee. Executive Director Jerry T. Risner has led treatment efforts at the organization for over 25 years, and the agency reports serving more than 3,500 patients annually as the largest TennCare provider for alcohol and drug services in the state.
Buffalo Valley is accredited by The Joint Commission, an indicator of compliance with national standards for healthcare quality and patient safety. Payment options include TennCare, Medicaid, private insurance, self-pay, and sliding-scale considerations for individuals without insurance who meet program criteria, particularly those seeking opioid treatment. Prospective clients are encouraged to contact the organization directly to discuss intake, prescreening, and the most appropriate site for their care.
