About Chalmers P Wylie VA ACC
The Chalmers P. Wylie Veterans Outpatient Clinic, formally the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center, sits at 420 North James Road on Columbus’s east side. As one of the largest VA outpatient facilities in the country, the clinic serves veterans across Central Ohio and houses Recovery Services – the VA’s outpatient substance use disorder program for veterans coping with alcohol, opioid, and other drug use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health conditions.
Recovery Services delivers ambulatory addiction care rather than inpatient residential treatment. The clinical lineup includes individual counseling, group programming, intensive outpatient services, and medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a core modality, and trauma-informed care for combat-related and military sexual trauma is integrated throughout – critical given how many veterans present with PTSD alongside substance use. Veterans requiring inpatient detox or residential rehabilitation are referred into the broader VA system for higher levels of care.
Eligibility is straightforward: veterans enrolled in VA health care can access Recovery Services through their primary care team or by self-referral to the program. Same-day mental health screenings are offered when crisis-level needs are identified, and telehealth options expand access for veterans living outside Columbus or facing transportation barriers. American Sign Language services accommodate Deaf and hard-of-hearing veterans, and the clinic accepts patients regardless of discharge status under VA eligibility guidelines.
The Chalmers P. Wylie facility operates under VA accreditation by The Joint Commission, the same standard that governs civilian academic medical centers. Care is delivered at no out-of-pocket cost to most enrolled veterans, with VA benefits and TRICARE coverage handling treatment expenses. The clinic phone for general appointments is (614) 257-5200, and Recovery Services can be reached directly at (614) 257-5443.
