About Cognitive Connection
The Cognitive Connection sits at 929 15th Street NE in Hickory, with a second office in Conover, North Carolina. Founded in 1995 by Clay, Wilson & Associates to improve the lives of adolescents and adults across the Unifour area, the practice has grown into a fully integrated care provider that combines substance use treatment, behavioral health, primary care, women’s health, weight loss management, and tailored care management under one roof. Leadership includes Chief Executive Officer Julie Walker, BSO, Chief Financial Officer Heidi Miller, Chief Operating Officer Josh Clay, Medical Director Justin Crouse, DMSc, PA-C, CAQ-Psychiatry, and Clinical Director Kristen Seese, MA, NCC, LCAS, LCMHC, CCS.
Behavioral health and substance use services form a core service line. Counselors specialize in behavioral intervention and substance use treatment, with a 24/7 crisis line at 828-217-3922. The practice accepts DWI, court, family, self, doctor, social worker, and probation referrals – making it a primary resource for the Catawba County criminal justice system as well as for self-directed clients seeking help. Federal probation coordination is handled by Andrea King-Shippy, MA, LCAS-A. Adolescent services for ages 12 to 17 include individual and family counseling, the Parent And Youth Connection (PAYC) program, the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program, and 18B and underage drinking violation classes managed by Adolescent Program Manager Tim Cook.
Primary care and behavioral health are integrated so that patients can access psychiatric services, behavioral health counseling, women’s health, weight management, and sick visits within the same practice. Same-day primary care appointments are often available. Tailored Care Management assigns a single care manager who performs a comprehensive assessment and builds an individualized care plan, coordinating services for clients who need help navigating multiple touchpoints. Nurse Practitioner Roxanne Price, MSN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, provides both primary care and psychiatric services. Peer support specialists led by Kenneth Fox, CADC, NCCPSS, supplement clinical services.
The Cognitive Connection is CARF-accredited and operates with a financial structure designed to remove barriers. Many substance use services are grant-funded; for services not covered by grants, the practice offers a sliding scale fee and works with clients on payment schedules. Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, state insurance, and self-pay are all accepted. Office hours run Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM. The main line is (828) 327-6026 in Hickory or (828) 256-3436 in Conover.
