About Freedom House Recovery Center Chapel Hill Outpatient Clinic
The Chapel Hill Outpatient Clinic at 118 New Stateside Drive is the ambulatory pillar of Freedom House Recovery Center, the 50-year-old behavioral health agency headquartered on the same campus. Where the adjacent Facility-Based Crisis building handles detox and stabilization, this clinic carries the day-to-day work of recovery: weekly individual counseling, group therapy, medication management, and the structured intensive outpatient curriculum that most clients move through after acute care.
Freedom House runs two distinct outpatient tracks under North Carolina’s substance use service definitions. Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient (SAIOP) provides multiple clinical hours per week in a group-based format for clients who can live at home but need more support than weekly therapy. Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment (SACOT) extends that intensity for clients with higher needs. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is integrated for opioid and alcohol use disorders, and the clinic also handles SU/MH assessments, DWI services, psychiatric evaluations, and conflict-resolution mediation.
Dual-diagnosis programming is core. Many clients enter through Freedom House’s mobile crisis or FBC services and step down into this clinic for ongoing care, so the clinical staff are accustomed to managing co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders simultaneously rather than sequentially. Dr. James Groce is the Medical Director across Freedom House programs, and Christopher Scoville (MSW, MBA, LCSW, LCAS) leads as Clinical Director.
