About Hope House Treatment Center
Hope House Treatment Center is a non-profit residential inpatient program in Crownsville, Maryland, located on the sprawling 970-acre site formerly known as Crownsville Hospital Center. The center treats substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health challenges, and problem gambling, with care delivered by addiction-trained nurses, a physician, certified and associate counselors, and treatment aides. Medical and nursing care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The residential program spans medically supervised withdrawal management through individual counseling and group work, and includes Acudetox acupuncture as a complementary modality. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy anchors the clinical approach, used for alcohol and drug use as well as depression and other concerns. After residential care, clients can step down into Hope House’s outpatient and intensive outpatient programs, which run out of two satellite locations in Laurel, Maryland.
Hope House traces its roots to 1983, when Galesville native Robert Hartge — a retired Merchant Marine and engineer for the Navy’s Bureau of Ships, Naval Ships System Command, and the Center for Naval Analysis — set out with a group of volunteers to establish a drug treatment center specifically for destitute individuals experiencing substance use disorders. The Crownsville campus has carried that founding mission forward for more than four decades, layering modern clinical services onto a setting with deep institutional history.
The center is in-network with most major commercial insurance, accepts Maryland Medicaid, and welcomes self-pay clients. Insurance verification takes a few minutes and admissions responds within 24 hours. Populations served include veterans, young adults, men and women, court-ordered clients, and those with HIV/AIDS support needs. The main campus is at 26 Marbury Drive in Crownsville (Anne Arundel County), with outpatient sites at 419 and 429 Main Street in Laurel.
