St. Mark’s Place Institute for Mental Health Inc., operating as UNITAS, has anchored mental health and addiction care in Manhattan’s East Village since 1983. The clinic occupies the first, second, and third floors of 57 St. Marks Place, a few blocks from Astor Place and within walking distance of the L, N, R, and 6 trains. Dr. Roman Pabis, who founded the clinic, brings a multidisciplinary background captured in his credentials of Ph.D., MD, MS, MA, and Licentiate, and built UNITAS around an integrated, systems-based approach to mental, physical, and substance use care.
Levels of care center on outpatient services for adults 18 and older, including medically controlled outpatient detoxification. The clinic explicitly describes its detox program as outpatient rather than inpatient, which fits the urban storefront model and makes ambulatory detox accessible to working adults. Medication-assisted treatment is offered with both buprenorphine and naltrexone for opioid use disorder. The substance use program is integrated with primary care, mental health, DWI/DUI treatment, and advanced psychiatric therapeutics including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine-assisted therapy.
