About Serenity Knolls Treatment Center
Serenity Knolls Treatment Center is a residential addiction treatment program located on a quiet campus in Forest Knolls, Marin County, California. With more than 25 years of operation and accreditation from CARF International, the program serves adults 18 and older who are working to recover from drug and alcohol addiction. The facility was named to Newsweek’s 2025 list of Best Addiction Treatment Centers in California, reflecting both the longevity and clinical reputation of the program.
The continuum of care begins with medically supervised detoxification under the oversight of a medical director and clinical staff who help residents stabilize before transitioning into residential treatment. Residential programming layers evidence-based therapy with the supportive structure of a 12-step community, while an Extended Care Program is available for clients who benefit from a longer stabilization arc before returning home. A dedicated Family Program brings loved ones into the recovery process, and a lifetime Alumni Program provides continuing connection long after discharge.
Clinically, Serenity Knolls combines a wide range of evidence-based and experiential therapies. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy form the cognitive core, supported by experiential modalities including equine-assisted work, individual therapy, group therapy, and family counseling. Co-occurring mental health conditions are evaluated at intake and addressed concurrently with addiction. Many staff members are themselves in recovery, lending lived experience to the clinical team’s evidence-based work.
Serenity Knolls accepts TRICARE, private insurance through major carriers including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente, Optum, and TriWest Healthcare Alliance, as well as self-pay. The center does not accept Medi-Cal. Admissions counselors are available to discuss treatment options, verify insurance, and coordinate travel to the campus. Services are delivered in English; the program can be reached at (415) 488-0400.
