Set on a wooded estate in Fairfield County, Silver Hill Hospital has treated psychiatric illness and substance use since 1931 and operates as one of the few freestanding, nonprofit psychiatric hospitals in the Northeast. The campus model lets clinicians move patients between inpatient, residential, and outpatient care without breaking the therapeutic relationship, which the hospital cites as one reason it draws referrals from across the country and overseas.
The substance use program is integrated with full psychiatric services, so co-occurring conditions are treated alongside addiction rather than in parallel. Medical detoxification is provided on-site as the entry point for patients withdrawing from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or stimulants, with 24-hour nursing and physician oversight. Patients then step down into residential treatment houses organized around population and acuity, including the Adolescent Program, the Transitional Living Program, and the Trauma and Dissociation track, before continuing in outpatient or intensive outpatient care.
Clinical leadership reflects the hospital’s academic orientation. President and Medical Director Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD oversees a staff that includes Chief Medical Officer Mark Russ, MD, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Amy Swift, MD, Medical Director of Admissions Nadia Gilbo, MD, and adolescent specialist Frank Bartolomeo, PhD, LCSW. Many clinicians hold faculty appointments at affiliated medical schools, and the hospital publishes research through its Academy for Research and Education.
Care is grounded in evidence-based modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy, augmented by comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and complementary therapies like art, movement, and mindfulness. Silver Hill accepts Medicare, TRICARE, private insurance, and self-pay arrangements, and the campus is approved as an Opioid Treatment Program through SAMHSA.
