About White River Junction VA Medical Center
The White River Junction VA Medical Center serves veterans across Vermont and the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire from its main campus at 215 North Main Street, with its substance use treatment clinic in Unit 116-A. As a tertiary-care VA medical center, the facility offers a complete continuum: medically managed detoxification, residential rehabilitation, outpatient counseling, and Intensive Outpatient programming, all delivered as covered services for eligible veterans.
Clinical care follows VA national substance use treatment protocols, anchored by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and Medication-Assisted Treatment with buprenorphine and naltrexone (and methadone through VA partners where indicated). Because the patient population is veterans, the program integrates with PTSD care, traumatic brain injury services, and mental health treatment under the same VA electronic health record, ensuring that co-occurring conditions are treated together rather than in isolated silos.
Residential rehabilitation, often referred to as inpatient or domiciliary care, provides structured 24/7 treatment for veterans who cannot safely stabilize in an outpatient setting. Length of stay is individualized, with typical residential stays running several weeks. After residential, veterans step down into outpatient counseling and telehealth-supported follow-up, with peer recovery support and alumni engagement extending the recovery community beyond the campus walls.
The medical center is accredited by both The Joint Commission and CARF, a dual mark of clinical and operational quality. Care is covered through VA benefits, generally at no cost for service-connected conditions, and the VA Community Care Network can authorize care at non-VA partner facilities when capacity, geography, or specialty needs make that the better option. The campus also coordinates with the regional Vet Center for community-based readjustment counseling that supports long-term recovery.
