About
About Wilmington Treatment Center
Wilmington Treatment Center has served North Carolina since 1984 and was named the #1 addiction treatment center in North Carolina on Newsweek’s 2025 Best Addiction Treatment Centers list. The program is Joint Commission accredited and licensed as a hospital, an important distinction that allows the team to manage patients with complicated medical co-morbidities alongside their substance use disorder. The center sits on Troy Drive in Wilmington’s New Hanover County and serves adults eighteen and older from across the southeastern United States.
The clinical continuum runs from medical detox through residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient (delivered from a separate Wilmington IOP location), and medication-assisted treatment. The multidisciplinary team includes a medical director who is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Addiction Medicine and also licensed as an oncologist, internist, and general practitioner. Licensed masters-level clinicians, certified substance abuse counselors, an addiction medicine specialist, a licensed recreational therapist, registered nurses, and physician assistants round out the staff.
Specialty tracks set Wilmington apart from a generic rehab. Operation Recovery is a dedicated military program for active-duty service members, veterans, and first responders, and TRICARE is accepted to support access. Foundations Training serves clients whose addiction is intertwined with chronic pain – a population most general programs are not equipped to address. The Young Adult Group focuses on clients aged 18-30, while the Middle Adult Group serves the older population, recognizing that recovery culture and developmental needs differ across the lifespan.
Programming covers the full range of substance use disorders, including alcohol, opioids (with specialized opiate rehab and detox), cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, inhalants, prescription drugs, synthetic marijuana, and stimulants. Recreation therapy and daily leisure activities complement evidence-based individual, group, and family therapy. Wilmington Treatment Center accepts Medicaid, Medicare, TRICARE, most private insurance plans, and self-pay, with an admissions team that walks callers through verification, criteria, and a typical day at the center before they commit.
