Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Illinois

Illinois has a very high number of drug and alcohol detox and addiction treatment services throughout the state. Most of the detox centers in the state are located in Chicago, Rockville, and East St. Louis although there are many more scattered around Illinois. As far as inpatient detox centers are concerned, almost all of them are in Chicago. There are only two more in the state with one in Peoria and another in Moline. Outpatient detox centers are by far the most common in Illinois.

It's usually necessary for someone to seek aftercare once detox is complete. Illinois has dozens of treatment providers that can help someone further their recovery. There are 78 residential treatment programs and 633 outpatient treatment centers throughout Illinois. The huge number of drug rehab centers in the state may make finding the right one difficult. Even though there are many options, there are some questions that you can ask yourself to narrow down your choices. Some centers specialize in drug addiction while others specialize in alcohol treatment. There are also prescription drug rehab centers. Depending on the substance that someone used, certain types of rehab programs may be more appropriate.

Mental health issues are another thing to consider. According to Mental Health America, Illinois ranks at number 12 out of the nation. This means that there are relatively few mental health issues and plentiful access to mental health services in the state. That being said, dual diagnosis issues are very common alongside substance use disorders. Finding rehab facilities that are equipped to help people with dual diagnosis conditions can make a very big difference in their chances of recovery. These substance abuse treatment centers provide more behavioral therapy and behavioral health services than ordinary treatment programs. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues then a dual diagnosis treatment center may be a good choice for you. Thankfully, Illinois has 348 treatment providers that can help people with dual diagnosis conditions.

There are several dozen high-quality drug and alcohol detox centers across Illinois. Entering one of these centers is often the first step toward long-term sobriety. These centers can also provide referrals for someone who is looking for further treatment and care after detox has been completed.

Drug Abuse in Illinois

Illinois is in the middle of the opioid epidemic in America. As of 2016, Illinois was in 9th place for the most heroin overdose deaths out of every state in America. Illinois was also in the top 10 for drug-related deaths that include both heroin and fentanyl. In Peoria in 2017, there was an incident in which methoxyacetyl fentanyl was sold as crack cocaine. This resulted in multiple fatalities due to fentanyl overdose. Finally, in 2018 there were over 45 opioid prescriptions written for every 100 people. This equates to almost every other person in the state having an opioid prescription.

The DEA has noted that Illinois has a severe heroin problem. This has grown to include fentanyl in recent years although fentanyl has been less accessible since the COVID epidemic. As a major hub for drug trafficking activity in the Midwest, Illinois has seen steadily rising overdose rates. In 2018, the CDC reported that there was actually a decrease in heroin and prescription opioid overdose deaths in Illinois. At the same time there was a rise in fentanyl overdose deaths over this same time. As of 2018, there were 1,050 heroin overdose deaths and 539 prescription opioid overdose deaths in Illinois. This is contrasted to 1,568 fentanyl overdose deaths over the same period of time.
