Wyoming has seen some dramatic increases in opioid and other drug use ever since the opioid crisis began. In particular, ever since 2016 the state has seen significant increases in prescription opioids being stolen, either through armed robbery incidents or by pharmacy employees themselves. Additionally, the state is a major nexus for drug trafficking in the western US, and several Mexican cartels have an interest in Wyoming as a drug corridor. Aside from the cartels, local drug distribution is handle by several gangs throughout the state, including MS-13, Pagans, and the Sons of Silence gangs on behalf of the cartels. Wyoming does not regularly report drug overdose deaths to any national body, so it is difficult to gauge the exact scope of the problem within the state. That being said, if someone is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction in Wyoming, there are many options for recovery. There are many drug and alcohol detox centers across the state, and these programs can help someone safely detox from drugs or alcohol, and refer them to continuing care and treatment after detox has been safely completed.

Underage drinking is a major problem in most states, but it’s especially problematic in the state of Wyoming. In fact, it’s estimated that of all the alcohol sold in the state of Wyoming between 2007 and 2008, approximately 23 percent was sold to adolescents and teens who were under the legal drinking age.
There are a number of substances that are problematic in Wyoming, but the state has been experiencing a major problem with methamphetamine, or “crystal meth”. In 2010 alone, records show that 687 Wyoming residents entered addiction treatment programs for crystal meth.
Although crystal meth was becoming a major problem in 2010, there were other substances with increasing rates of abuse throughout the state of Wyoming. In fact, of the 564,000 people living in Wyoming in 2010, records show that 6,072 individuals enrolled in treatment programs for alcohol or drug addiction.
When it comes to underage tobacco use, Wyoming sees more high school students using tobacco products than there are tobacco-using high school students nationwide. According to surveys, approximately 22 percent of Wyoming high school students have used tobacco at least once over the past month while just 18 percent of high school students nationwide have used tobacco products over the same period of time.
There are more Wyoming high school students using tobacco products than high school students nationwide; however, marijuana use is more prevalent among high school students nationwide than in Wyoming. Specifically, it’s estimated that 36 percent of Wyoming high school students have tried marijuana at least once compared to 40 percent of high school students nationwide.
