Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Washington

Washington has seen major increases in drug activity ever since the emergence of the opioid crisis. In particular, Washington saw a 200% increase in prescription drug armed robberies between 2016 to 2017. This is in addition to increases in non-violent prescription drug theft by pharmacy employees throughout the state. Washington has also seen increases in the already high levels of heroin, fentanyl, prescription opioids (legitimate and counterfeit), cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana. The state has also been increasingly used as a drug trafficking corridor by the Sinaloa and La Familia cartels out of Mexico. While the cartels manage the drug trafficking component of their operation, local gangs including the Mexican Mafia, Norteños, Sureños, and Peckerwoods are responsible for local drug distribution on behalf of the cartels. While the drug problem may be escalating in Washington state, there is still hope for people who are trying to recover from a drug or alcohol addiction. There are dozens of highly-regarded drug and alcohol detox centers all across the state, and these facilities often act as the first step towards long-term recovery.

Washington Addiction & Detox Statistics

  • According to surveys, about eight percent of the U.S. population reports past-month drug use, which means that only eight in one hundred Americans have used some type of illicit drug in the past month. In the state of Washington, this number is much higher at ten percent or about one in ten Washingtonians.
  • It was found that over the course of 2007, there were 1,003 deaths from drug overdoses in the state of Washington alone. This has lead to an increase of needle exchange programs and the distribution of naloxone.
  • Like the rest of the U.S., Washington has been experiencing a major heroin problem with rates of heroin use, addiction, and overdose deaths being higher in recent years than ever before. In fact, just Tacoma detox and rehab centers alone saw a 340% increase in opioid addiction admissions from 2002 to 2015. However, Washington has also been experiencing a methamphetamine, or crystal meth problem, with 22 percent of all admissions to addiction treatment programs being for individuals seeking help for crystal methamphetamine addiction.
  • There is a major problem with youths abusing alcohol and drugs in the state of Washington. In fact, between 2009 and 2013, at least three percent of youths over the age of 12 were suffering from some type of dependence on illicit drugs. As well, approximately five percent of Washington adolescents aged 12 to 17 have used illicit drugs in the past year, which is significantly higher than the national average of just two percent.
  • There have been a number of studies to find that Washington has elevated rates of deaths caused by mind-altering substances. According to studies, about 13 percent of all deaths that occur in the state of Washington are either caused by alcohol abuse or illicit drug overdose.

  • The Washington State Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, or DBHR, is a state-run, state-funded organization that oversees and funds substance abuse treatment for individuals who receive Medicaid.
  • The Chemical Dependency Professionals of Washington State — called CDPWS for short — is a regional affiliate of NAADAC, established to be a forum whereby individuals can network with like-minded peers to promote shared interests and to foster a strong network of communication among addiction treatment professionals throughout the state of Washington. This organization represents healthcare and addiction treatment professionals throughout the state of Washington, which the group has broken into six separate zones or “regions”.
  • The Washington Council for Behavioral Health is a coalition of licensed addiction treatment and behavioral health professionals from all over the state who have united to form a common voice for the behavioral health and addiction treatment communities. Specifically, the group advocates for legislative and systemic improvements, behavioral health and addiction education in communities, and the development of strategic partnerships that promote community wellness, best practices, and integrated care.
  • The Washington Society of Addiction Medicine, or WSAM, is the state’s chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). This organization seeks to promote the treatment and prevention of addiction, according to the highest standards and state-of-the-art methods.
