Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Ohio

Ohio is possibly the hardest-hit state due to the opioid epidemic. It holds a distinction as being on 5 out of 6 top 10 lists for opioid overdose deaths and opioid-positive drug tests. Ohio holds 1st place for the number of forensic tests that tested positive for heroin, fentanyl, and oxycodone in 2016, and is in 3rd and 4th place for heroin and fentanyl overdose deaths, respectively. Additionally, Ohio has one of the highest heroin overdose death rates per capita in the country, at about 14 deaths per 100,000 residents. There is also a significant cocaine overdose death rate in Ohio, at roughly 10 deaths per 100,000 residents. Crystal meth is also a significant issue in Ohio, with around 29 overdose deaths per 100,000 residents; one of the highest rates in the country. Overall, Ohio ranks #2 in the country for drug overdose deaths, at 39.1 deaths per 100,000 residents. While the drug problem in Ohio is severe, the chances for recovery are also widespread.   • Over the course of 2012, more than one in four admissions to addiction treatment facilities in Ohio was for opioid addiction.
  • The recent spike in heroin use is frequently described as an “epidemic” and has affected virtually the entire country. Ohio, in particular, has been affected profoundly by this major rise in heroin use, resulting in Ohio having the second-highest drug overdose deaths in the entire United States.
  • In 2014, more than 75 percent of all unnatural deaths that occurred in Butler County, Ohio, were found to have been the result of heroin use.
  • According to records, there were 149 overdose deaths from heroin in Butler County, Ohio, throughout 2015; for the current year, that number is expected to be 500 percent higher.
  • On its own, heroin is an extremely lethal drug; however, there’s a recent trend in which fentanyl is mixed into the heroin to make the drug stronger after it’s diluted with adulterants. This has led to a string of overdose deaths and poisonings due to the fentanyl-laced heroin making its way throughout the United States. Ohio has seen a particularly large number of fentanyl poisonings due to this trend with 1,155 fentanyl poisonings in 2015 alone.
